Clark Montgomery grew up in Texas but made the move to the East coast in 1999 to further his eventing career. Montgomery has taken his eventing career seriously, training with top riders and coaches such as Karen and David O’Connors and Mark Phillips among others on his rise to the upper levels of the sport.
Montgomery’s move to the East coast proved to be the jumping point he needed in his career as he was named to the USEF’s High Performance Training list in 2001 and has been no stranger to the list since his first appearance.
His career has also taken him to European events where he has seen the top levels of the events on the continent for multiple years. Montgomery won international events such as the 2008 Knaptoft CIC1* in England, in addition to placing in multiple events in Europe during the 2008 season when he was based in the UK. Also in 2008, Montgomery and Up Spirit won the CIC3*-W at Red Hills International Horse Trials and placed second in CIC3*-W at The Fork less than a month later.
Montgomery and Loughan Glen made their first appearance together at the upper levels at the Poplar Place Farm March Horse Trials in 2010 where the pair made a big splash by winning the CIC2* division. June of the same year would see the pair back in upper level competition with a 12th-place finish in Canada at the Bromont Three-Day Event in the CCI2* division.
In September, Montgomery would once again show that he could successfully ride different horses as he rode Cyrano and Universe to first- and third-place finishes at the Poplar Place Farm September Horse Trial in the CIC2* event. Loughan Glen and Universe would then allow Montgomery to sweep the top two spots in the CCI2* at Fair Hill International in October. Cyrano would give Montgomery a third-place finish at the Chattahoochee Hills CCI2* later that month.
Montgomery started off the 2011 by winning an Advanced division at the Pine Top Spring Advanced Horse Trials in late February, setting off a banner year. Loughan Glen and Montgomery would again win the Advanced division in the Poplar Place Farm March Trials before moving up to their first CIC3*together, placing third at The Fork. Montgomery and Loughan Glen won their first CCI3*event at Bromont. After a short break, the pair returned to win an Advanced division at Millbrook.
Montgomery placed fifth on Loughan Glen in early September at the Blenheim CCI3* before returning to the United States to pilot Reignman to a win at the CIC2* at Poplar Place a few weeks later.
In 2012, Montgomery began with a seventh-place finish with Universe in The Fork CIC3*. The pair then came in eighth in the Jersey Fresh International CIC3*. With Loughan Glen, Montgomery finished third in the Bromont CIC3*. The pair then traveled overseas and finished 15th at the Barbury Castle CIC3*. Returning to the U.S., Montgomery and Universe were fourth in the Plantation Field CIC3*. Montgomery represented the U.S. for the first time at the Boekelo CCIO3*. Following the 2012 season, Montgomery relocated to England.
He began 2013 with a solid seventh-place finish in the Belton Park CIC3* with Universe. The pair then earned a Mitsubishi Motors Badminton CCI4* completion. Montgomery rode Universe on the U.S. Nations Cup team at the Aachen CICO3*. With Loughan Glen, Montgomery came in second in the Barbury Castle CIC3*. They had another top performance, coming in third in the Blenheim CCI3*. Montgomery closed out the year with a 10th-place finish in the Les Étoiles de Pau CCI4*.
In 2014, Montgomery finished the Belton Park CIC3* in 15th place with Universe. He then represented the U.S. again in the Nations Cup competition at the Boekelo CCIO3* with Loughan Glen.
